The North Carolina Christmas Tree Association’s top priority is the well-being of our farmers, their families, their workers (which are like family), industry partners, friends, neighbors, and all those navigating the devastation of Hurricane Helene. North Carolina is the second largest Christmas-tree producing state in the country, with 96% of the Christmas tree production based in the Western North Carolina mountain region. We do not expect the aftermath of Hurricane Helene to have a significant effect on the supply of real North Carolina Fraser fir Christmas trees this holiday season. Christmas tree farmers are resilient, and they possess the grit and determination to overcome the most challenging circumstances.

While Helene is the most catastrophic storm most have seen in their lifetime of living in the Western North Carolina Mountains, Christmas tree farming is a livelihood and a large economic contributor to the Western North Carolina Mountain Region. It will take some time to fully assess the extent and implications of damage to Christmas tree farms affected by the hurricane, but our farmers have weathered the storm and are ready to persevere. Our Christmas tree farmers are committed to harvesting their trees and delivering North Carolina Fraser fir Christmas trees to retailers across the country.

At this point, we are still gathering information from our farmers regarding the extent that their farms were impacted by the storm. The next step will be working together to create a plan for harvest and shipping as we prioritize the safety and welfare of our farmers, their families, and their workers.

We are grateful for the outpouring of support from neighbors, friends, volunteers from various areas and states, and the tremendous amount of support and guidance from our ag community including the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, local NC State University Cooperative Extension Centers, elected officials, and partner organizations.

We have a long way to go, but we have every confidence that in November, we will welcome our faithful friends to our local choose and cut farms and our wholesale Christmas trees will be on their way down the mountain, ready to help families celebrate the merriest season of all.

Many have asked how they can support Christmas tree farmers in Western North Carolina. Be sure to buy a REAL Christmas tree, preferably a North Carolina Fraser fir, but any real tree helps support what we dedicate our lives to do.

Jennifer Greene, Executive Director of the NC Christmas Tree Association

FedEx and Christmas SPIRIT Foundation Celebrate Landmark Milestone: Delivering the 300,000th Tree to Military Families This Season

This year, FedEx Freight delivered the 300,000th tree for the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation’s annual Trees for Troops program. The milestone tree was presented at Fort Liberty in North Carolina on December 1, 2023. Altogether, 16,502 trees were delivered to 94 bases across 6 branches of service and one National Guard Training Center. This program starts at our Christmas tree farm, with a total of 300 farms from 26 states providing trees, donated directly by them or their customers and local sponsors.

In North Carolina, 41 farms and individuals donated a total of 1, 182 trees that went to 3 bases: Camp LeJeune, NC, Fort Sill, OK, and Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, LA.

There were 56 loading stations for the trees, with two official North Carolina sites at the Upper Mountain Research Station in Laurel Springs and the NC Cooperative Extension Service Avery County Office in Newland. It takes a lot of work to gather and tag the trees and manage a loading event on a designated day. We rely on FFA and ROTC students from Ashe, Alleghany and Avery County to help load the trees. Local schools help fill out tags sending personal greetings to service families on each tree.

Thanks to everyone who donated their time and trees this year!

Executive Director, Jennifer Greene, Awarded for Her Volunteer Roll

Jennifer Greene hit the ground running when she became Executive Director of the North Carolina Christmas Tree Association (NCCTA) in November of 2009, given that state-wide tree pickups were scheduled to happen just a few weeks from that time. However, Greene proved her skills by making plans and phone calls to growers to arrange for donations and pick up locations, while maximizing the program’s exposure to constituents and followers of the North Carolina growers’ association.

“It’s a lot of work, but I don’t do it alone,” says Greene. “I have a wonderful assistant who helps me make phone calls, plan the details, and coordinate volunteers. She assists with all aspects of making it happen. We always have our pickups the week after Thanksgiving, and being that North Carolina is the second largest producer in the nation for Christmas trees, it’s a very busy time. It is important to coordinate dates that also work for the growers, because without their contributions – this program would not exist.”

Greene credits her 13 years of success as Executive Director to assistance from the community, including that of pickup location hosts, the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC)’s from Ashe County and Avery County High Schools, and the Allegheny High School agriculture students. “The students come to tag, and load, and do whatever we need them to,” says Greene. “And they come whether it’s sunny and warm, raining, windy, or there’s snow coming down and it’s freezing cold. Honestly, once people find out about the program details and the impact that it has, and how long it’s been going on, people feel inspired to help and contribute.”

Local community groups such as restaurants, businesses, and private organizations have generously provided snacks, labor, and even homemade baked goods over the years. “School kids in the communities of Western North Carolina participate by drawing pictures and writing messages on the tree tags,” says Greene. “By reading their messages and seeing the images they draw, you are able to experience things from their perspective on Christmas. Trees for Troops, and the Christmas tree industry is one of my favorite things about doing this each year. The NCCTA has a wonderful community of supporters that help make the program possible each and every year.” These vital connections also include public figures and dignitaries who come to help with loading events, providing support for the program, and even getting their hands dirty by tagging and loading trees.

In 2022, Greene volunteered at the last-minute request of CSF, to attend and later publicize the T4T event at Fort Bragg, while representing CSF and all of the grower donors. “It was such a heart-warming experience for me to be able to see firsthand the recipients of the trees. My goal is that the next time I go to a base, I go after school hours, because I would love to be able to see the reactions of the children and the families as they receive and choose their trees,” says Greene. She was also able to supplement a shortfall in tree numbers at the base with a generous contribution of fresh wreaths from growers.

Greene experienced the true reach of the CSF while on a recent kayak tour in Key West, Florida, where a participant inquired about her husband’s NCCTA shirt. “Turns out that he is a Battalion Sergeant Major and has been a recipient of a T4T tree for the past four years,” says Greene. “He thanked me for my work with the program and expressed his gratitude for receiving a tree each year. It was really cool to randomly meet someone who has received a North Carolina Fraser Fir Christmas tree through the T4T program!”

Greene believes that the reason for CSF’s continued impactful growth is the generosity of the Christmas tree growers that make it happen. “I believe it’s an inspiring example of how we can come together as an industry to express our appreciation to those who serve and have served,” says Greene.

Trees for Troops®, a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, provides free, farm-grown Christmas Trees to United States armed forces members in all branches of the military and their families, through donations, sponsorships, grants and the work of many volunteers. The mission of the Christmas Spirit Foundation is to advance the Christmas Spirit for kids, families and the environment through programs and activities. The Trees for Troops® achieves that mission, one tree at a time. Over the past 18 years, with donations, sponsorships and support from Christmas tree farmers, the program has delivered a total of more than 293,000 Real Christmas Trees!

Since 2005 the NC Christmas Tree Association and our member farms have been a part of this fantastic event. Last year 1,049 North Carolina Christmas trees were delivered to Ft. Bragg, NC, NAS Meridian, MS, Ft. Stewart, GA, and Hunter Army Airfield, GA. We could not do it without the help of Ashe and Avery County ROTC students, Alleghany 4-H students, Upper Mountain Research Center, and Avery County Cooperative Extension Center.

For 2022, the program estimates that more than 16,000 total trees were picked up from 54 locations and given to 84 total bases across 5 service branches in the US. Trees are donated by individual farms and lots, the collective efforts of state and regional Christmas Tree associations, local sponsoring groups, and the customers of participating locations. Hundreds of donors and volunteers participate each year to make Trees for Troops® happen.

Siblings Alex Church and Amber Scott of Cline Church Nursery won the supreme honor of presenting a Fraser fir Christmas tree to the White House for display in the The Blue Room by competing in the National Christmas Tree Association’s Tree and Wreath Contest in summer of 2023. This contest marked the fifteenth time a North Carolina Fraser fir Christmas tree was chosen to be the centerpiece of the Blue Room, the most times a tree from North Carolina and a particular s pecies have been featured from any state. On October 9, 2023, White House staff traveled to Fleetwood to select the perfect Christmas tree for the Blue Room. After looking at six great choices of 18-21′ Fraser fir trees, Senior Groundskeeper Dale Haney and Chief White House Usher Robert Downing chose a 19′ Fraser fir that Alex had planted while he was in high school, making the choice even more special. Friends, family, industry peers, neighbors, dignitaries, and members of the Fleetwood community gathered to watch as Alex Church harvested the 19′ Fraser fir. “I got to cut it. It was great,” Church exclaimed. “it looked bigger (cut down) than it did over there standing up!”

After cutting the tree, there was a sendoff ceremony and celebration at Cline Church Nursery where community members and supporters from all over the state came to share in the celebration of the North Carolina Christmas Tree Industry. The Fraser fir was then loaded onto the NCDA&CS truck displaying a colorful North Carolina Fraser Fir Christmas Trees banner wrap, and transported to Washington, D.C. On November 20, 2023, Alex and Amber, along with their parents and families, traveled to Washington, D.C. to present the tree to First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden. Following tradition, the tree arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. “Tears came into my eyes when we walked outside and I got to see that because it was a surreal, very special and humbling moment,” said Amber Scott. “You’ve always seen pictures of it, but to be there in person and know we had a hand in growing that tree was really special.” It was an experience that the Church family will never forget as three generations got to go to the White House for the ceremony. Amber noted that it was especially wonderful that her and her brother Alex’s children got to witness this honor in a very up-close and personal way, something that most people will never get to do and that the family will always be able to treasure.

3rd Return to the White House by father/son growers, Rusty and Beau Estes!

PEAK FARMS – Providers of the 2021 Official White House Christmas Tree to be displayed in the Blue Room

Two-time National Christmas Tree Association Grand Champions, Rusty and Beau Estes, owners of Peak Farms, have once again earned the right to present an 18 1/2-foot Fraser fir to the White House for display in The Blue Room, making this tree lucky number three! They previously provided Fraser fir trees for the Blue Room in 2008 and 2012. They also provided a Fraser fir tree for the Vice President’s Residence in 2018, when they were named Reserve Grand Champions of the National Christmas Tree Association Tree Contest.

Rusty Estes has been involved in the Christmas tree industry since 1979, starting with only 200 trees in the ground and a retail lot in Lenoir, North Carolina. Rusty began growing Christmas trees on the side while working as a golf course superintendent in Avery County where he says, “the winters were tougher, and the ground was harder.” Rusty owned a Christmas tree retail lot for 15 years before selling out and moving to Ashe County, North Carolina with his wife Ann and two children, Beau and Katirie. Their family has since expanded and added three grandchildren, Athena, Colin, and Riley.

Beau graduated from North Carolina State University in 2002, and started working in the golf course industry. Beau moved back to Ashe County in 2003 and began his full-time career in Christmas trees. He married Amanda Korevec, who is currently a teacher at Blue Ridge Elementary School. They have two sons, Colin and Riley Estes.

Rusty and Beau have seen many changes in the Christmas tree industry, but one thing that remains the same is their dedication to education. Peak Farms collaborates with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, who conducts research projects on their farm that have potential impacts, not only for them, but for the entire industry. They also work to educate youth about Christmas trees. Every year local first graders make a trip to Peak Farms to learn about the benefits of Christmas trees. The children also place tags on harvested trees requesting the city and state of each buyer. The children then begin their mapping project showing where every tagged tree has been shipped. Students leave Peak Farms with their own tree that they can plant at their home.

“We haven’t done this on our own. We had a lot of help
getting started with what to do, when to do, and how to
do. We greatly appreciate everyone who has helped us
along the way.” Rusty Estes, Peak Farms

On September 24, 2018, White Officials came to Mountain Top Fraser Fir farm in Newland, NC owned by Larry Smith to select the tree being showcased in the Blue Room of the White House. Larry won this honor being the grand champion of the NC Christmas Tree Association contest and then the National Christmas Tree Contest in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Smith had attempted to win the contest 5 times.

The Christmas Tree was selected by White Chief Usher, Timothy Harleth, and Superintendent of the grounds, Dale Haney. Larry had selected 10 trees that would fit in the standards of the Blue room. After going around they selected the tree and topped it with a red bow.

The tree selection was followed by a brief press conference where Larry Smith, Jennifer Greene, Executive Director of NCCTA, and Timothy Harleth spoke. Larry Smith got emotional after speaking about how much this meant to him.

The Tree Cutting Ceremony was on November 14, 2018. Larry Smith was accompanied by his family and media while cutting the tree. The tree had to be lifted by a crane and placed on the bed of the truck in order to be sent to the loading site. The tree was 19 feet and 800 pounds. Before sending it on its way Larry cut a sliver off the trunk to have as a souvenir to remember this special day.

The tree was then transported to Mountain Glen Golf Course where there was a brief press conference. Steve Troxler, Jennifer Greene, Jerry Moody, and Larry Smith all spoke about this honor and what it means to Larry and the State of North Carolina. The tree was then loaded with the help of the Avery County High School JROTC. The tree then made its journey to White House going through Lenoir where Larry has a retail lot.

On November 19, 2018, the tree was presented to the First Family, Donald, and Melania Trump by Larry Smith and his family. The tree was then put up in the Blue room for everyone to see. Larry Smith and his Fiance Beth went back a week later to see the whole White House decorated including the Blue Room tree.

NC Fraser Fir’s have been selected to be in the White House 13 times since 1971. This is more than any other state.

Larry Smith has been growing Christmas trees since high school which expanded into planting just a few seedlings to it becoming a full-time farm. Larry has gotten his three sons involved as well as his brother who owns a Christmas Tree farm as well.

After providing trees for the Vice President, Governor, and State Capital, Smith is so excited to finally fulfill his dreams of being the White House Tree.
